A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” declared the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
