Patients Coming Off Slimming Medications Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People buying such medications need to be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Experts suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

People who have discontinued the medication report a powerful return of hunger.

"It was like a trigger activating and you become ravenous," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle changes.
